If you are interviewing in this job market, you need to sweat the small stuff. Your attention to detail demonstrates to others that they can trust you to deliver big projects.
On-site interviews are coming back. This is the checklist of details that are not to be missed.
- Plan your route to the office accordingly. If you are commuting to a major city, don’t drive! Take public transportation. This is not the time to test your luck with traffic.
- Arrive at the office at least 10 minutes early. Take the opportunity to get through security, into the office and compose yourself. Your interview starts as soon as you walk through the door. Being late is a non-starter.
- Match or exceed the expected level of business attire.
- Brainstorm and write down questions that you have about the job and the company before arriving. This means having separate questions prepared for HR, potential teammates, hiring managers, and executives.
- Don’t assume everyone has your resume or has seen in prior to the interview. Bring hard copies.
- Connect with your interviewers on LinkedIn prior to the interview. Learn about their career trajectory, interests and companies they have worked for.
- Practice your posture, handshakes, and body language.
- Research the company history, stock prices, news, clients, competitors and understand the current landscape.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm by asking about the timeline and process post interview.
- Post interview, send a follow up thank you email or handwritten note.
Your attention to detail will not go unnoticed. It means that your interview will go on without a hitch. Do not discount how much preparation creates a smooth process for everyone involved. If it has been a while since you have completed a job interview, consider doing a practice run with a trusted friend or family member.
